As a first-year law student at George Mason University’s Scalia Law School, I recently learned about the concept of consent, the fundamental right everyone has to determine what is done to their own body. This means medical treatment can only be given once a person has freely agreed to the treatment, been informed of the implications and risks, and without coercion.
